The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
