Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included no new data.
