The English and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
